Four assailants opened fire and hurled a bomb at Durga Puja Samiti , Local Strongman Neeraj Balmiki was shot dead while he was at a pandal in Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad, now Prayagraj, on Tuesday.
Allahabad: Even as the Uttar Pradesh government is occupied with the onerous task of renaming cities, a shocking incident has emerged from the state’s Allahabad city, now renamed as Prayagraj. Four assailants attacked a local strongman by opening fire and hurling a bomb at him as he was standing inside a Durga Puja pandal on Tuesday.
Neeraj Balmiki was shot dead and a bomb was hurled at him in the city’s Rajapur colony by unidentified miscreants. Police officials while confirming the incident said that Balmiki too had a number of cases lodged against him and was released from prison just a few days back. He was also the president of the Durga Pooja organizing Samiti.
CCTV footage from the scene of the crime shows two out of the four attackers opening fire at Balmiki sans any provocation and their accomplices throwing a bomb at the deceased. One of the attackers also injured himself while hurling the bomb in question, as suggested by visuals from the CCTV footage retrieved from the area.
Local police have not made any arrests in connection with the crime as of yet and are in the process of ascertaining the identity of the assailants. The brazen attack in broad daylight illustrates the breakdown of law and order in the state of Uttar Pradesh which has led to criminals roaming fearlessly on the streets of cities. To the surprise of the ruling dispensation, changing the name of a city clearly does not contribute in either improving its civic conditions or its law and order situation.
